Esther M. Lederberg discussed (with her second husband) the work that both she and her former husband Joshua Lederberg did at Camp Detrick, Maryland. Both Esther M. Lederberg and Joshua Lederberg had the necessary TOP SECRET clearances. At that time, the biological research done at Camp Detrick fell into two categories: normal research, and research into Biological Weapons. The research laboratories devoted to Biological Weapons are located in a distinctly different location at Camp Detrick (with restricted access), than the other laboratories.
Esther told her second husband that she never engaged in research in Biological Weapons. An attempt was made, under FOIA (Freedom of Information Act), through U.S. Congressperson Anna Eshoo to obtain information concerning the work that Joshua Lederberg did at Camp Detrick. Unfortunately, while this information is not formally censored, all such research in Biological Weapons may be searched only by exact title (not by the name of the researcher). Hence, to obtain the information desired, one must first have the exact information title to find it. Effectively, the information (which exists) is censored at this time. The letter below documents the unsuccessful attempt to use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to obtain this information.
